Last Friday's Terrorist Knife Attack and Car Fire
Incident (on the 09/11/2018) on Melbourne's
Bourke Street showed how a brave police force
and an alert public can reduce or limit the damage...

         Melbourne's Knife Attack (courtesy - TOI 09/11/2018 & Youtube)

Quote /// .... On Friday afternoon, 30-year-old Hassan     Khalif Shire Ali pulled up in Bourke Street  in a  four-wheel drive, containing gas cylinders turned to their open  position, in what police said was a  failed plan to cause an explosion.... /// Unquote                (courtesy news.com.au)

  • Hassan Khalif Shire Ali stabbed and killed an innocent 74-year-old popular restaurant owner and seriously injured 26 and 58-year-old innocent men, both needing surgeries.
  • The Victoria Police and members of the public responded instantly and bravely.
  • The Car did not explode due to the immediate response though it got burnt.
  • And very noticeably a nearby - reportedly Homeless Man took a shopping trolley and effectively reduced physical harms to more people by putting himself at harm's distance from the terrorist. While by contrast, the terrorist tried to fulfil his private objectives by killing and harming the innocents and affecting the lives of their dependents in the name of his extremist beliefs.
  • The homeless on the other hand didn't care for his own life and put himself at harm's distance from the criminal who had already killed one and injured two and wanted to blow up the car and cause more deaths - the homeless was ready to die to save others while the attacker wanted to die and kill others for his own sake !!
  • Two policemen put themselves at an extremely close distance from the attacker and gave the attacker a chance to surrender - putting themselves at high risk of being stabbed - one of the cops being a newly trained young man. They risked their lives to save the public and do their duties.
  • Finally, only upon facing multiple stabbing attempts by Hassan Khalif Shire Ali the young cop shot him to end the stabbing spree and also to save his mate and himself.
  • All this happened with no pre-warning, in spite of having several anti-terror measures and an alert police force.
  • But in spite of all the measures, it is the alert minds and actions of the members of the unafraid public that helped reduce the damage the terrorist wanted to inflict.
  • The bold standing up of the homeless man and engaging the attacker by the two cops with themselves showed the resolve of the peaceful civil society not to budge by the harmful extreme attacks by the rogue fanatics - but alas, the tragic loss of one innocent life and the life-changing injuries to the other two ... though it could have been even worse if not for these brave cops and the responding brave homeless man and also some others! ...

Artificial Intelligence at my doorsteps ! .....

For sometime now there has been a mention of an increased level of the applications of the Artificial intelligence(AI) in daily lives.

Yesterday, I had my share of experiencing it - by way of a good experience - in eyecare, optometry to be precise !

In the areas where there used be a big chance of human errors - the process now was much accurate and in fact very detailed too ! The optometrists were then able to speak and interact with the patients more and had much detailed data to act upon !

The accuracy of diagnosis was clearly up and definitely it was allowing more patients to be screened too - increasing the business thereby !

One good side of the AI, I must say - wa that very soon the AI role is going to increase so fast that the newer generations are bound to depend upon them and their parents will need to wonder how to accommodate this new dimension that is going to push the humans towards a superior level in a lot of material things - and with that there will be an increased need for its moderationa, rationalization and handling its impact on social, personal, professional lives and their quality overall !

#MeToo:-  As discussed with my son in today’s context!

14th  Oct 2018

It’s 14th October 2018 today, while driving through the Fitzroy and the Lygon Street areas of Melbourne I read out some of the sensational '#Me Too' news coming out of India to my 33yr old son - the very thoughtful and rational Eshan.
In his five minutes thoughtful talk he elaborated his views about ‘#Me Too’ so well!
Here is the summary of what he explained and I couldn't but totally agree with him in its entirety!
#Me Too - though considered to have been started in 2006 by Tarana Burke in the US on a specific agenda (ref. Wikipedia), has evolved in today's context, to a "process of self-realization"  for men & women both; it is not a 'movement' of taking revenge or to unsettle someone from their current activities and positions disgracefully before even proving them.
It is not a 'reckoning' but an 'orchestrated call for a global awakening’!  An awakening for both - the men & women so that it stops soonest if not at once! This is because the sexual harassment is a very sensitive but a subjective term and may be coming around the world from some men or women individually or in groups or even from some misguided children or groups of them (no matter how shocking it may sound). Vulnerable or consenting as it may appear - children / men / women individuals or groups of them being the recipients who may suffer silently that time as long as their major agenda of survival or self-advancement is being served but decide to speak up later once they feel secure as it appears from the current trends.
It is not about Women attacking Men after a lapse of decades – whether the incidents had occurred or not!

‘#Me Too’  as of now has evolved into the need of bringing-in the realisation in the societies globally, it’s about bringing self-realization at the  individual as well as social levels that such sexual harassments are no longer going to be tolerated – even if being exploited by someone for their self-advancements; it is also about addressing the practical topics but made taboo by  many civil societies and helped cover the perpetration of such incidents; it’s about stopping the acts of sexual harassments by individuals, social & organizational groups by triggering an awakening and instilling discipline in the context of today's domestic, social, workplace and social interactions! This includes the media based interactions and consequent behaviours too!

It may take huge efforts to bring-in the change, as an example take several age old terms used in the daily operational marine language that may need to be changed too because they may sound as sexually harassing to someone sensitive and not familiar with the non-civilian professional parlance – how to change them instantly?
Or how about several blogs, posts, movies and their scripts, ‘elders’ advice’ in may tribes, many books who may ‘teach’ the youngsters about how women may say something but mean something else? Shouldn’t those literatures be banned too for causing such misleading impressions and for promoting the sexual harassment indirectly?

As for the portrayal of the incidents by the 'victims' ,the world should never ridicule the Victims while trying to avert the misuse of the #Me Too trend.
Yet, one may wonder about the accuracy of the portrayals or identities of the perpetrators after the victim has gone through the emotional stress and shocks for long periods of time?

Requirements of technology based ‘hard’ evidence from the ‘#Me Too’ whistleblowers: – For the incidents of sexual harassments committed long ago the big question is whether there was any technology available that is available today? Is it fair to expect every victim to have been equipped with it at the time of the incidents? and also being familiar with its operation? How ludicrous it is to expect that?

Similarly instant shaming, humiliating, sacking of the accused is in my opinion hasty and ridiculous too, how rational is it that the very men who may have done remarkable service in the entertainment, governing, technological or any other fields get instantly paraded in front of the media, shamed and hounded by countless activists or dislodged completely from their professional - social or home position, stripped of the dignity even before they are proven to be guilty or even before the accusers' claims are verified properly?

Also what about the possibilities of the ’#Me Too’ being hijacked by those who are only seeking personal damage to the accused (rightly or wrongly in that) or want malicious gains from the targeted persons who may be individual men, women or even juveniles too? or perhaps by some for the partisan or extortionist reasons?

And one may also wonder if in all these 12 years, if there has been any case of ‘#Me Too’ accusations raised against a now-homeless man/woman who in some victim's memory recall was /were the perpetrators too? Why does it almost always has to be against some celebrity or a rich entity?

Conclusion: – The ‘#Me Too’ is not about displacing some highly placed men, it is not about taking revenge against anyone who may have fallen out with a woman - as in apparent in of most of the current day cases that are coming forth, it is not about those who knowingly walked into such situations for self-gains at the earlier instances and later felt like making the accusations when their own positions are well settled using those avenues and it is definitely not about bringing someone to justice either- bringing to justice doesn’t work as this! This is because the judiciary of a land can only function within the ambit of the governing laws of that particular state, while the true depth & scope of ‘#Me Too’ are way too vast and also global and it’s about the mind-sets of the accused (rightly or wrongly branded as one) and those of the victims,, both!

‘#Me Too’ in the current day contexts is certainly about making a true awakening and about changing the age-old bad habits, bad behaviour, exploiting interactions of people towards the vulnerable men-women-children; it is about improving individual behaviours , group behaviours, social behaviours and attitudes towards vulnerable men-women-children! It is about rethinking the behaviours of the ‘seniors’ & ‘bosses’ male or female and be in the offices or off-the-job or even within the house holds too !!

‘#Me Too’ is definitely about the importance of ‘consent’ and consent being given in a well established and traceable manner!

Only if this is realized quickly, a well-intended ‘#Me Too’ initiative will work constructively instead of making media hypes about the commonly known fields where regular inter-personal consensual involvements is a norm and have many individuals walking-in knowingly for self-advancements at that time but decry at a later date. These accusations about the past instances make news at a later date because the legal and social systems have had ignored and left them alone for long. But now in the light of ‘#Me Too’ it’s a high time to make a choice between saving such instances of sexual harassment against any gender or age and a chance to alter the way certain industries and situations worked traditionally being conducive to sexual harassment.
I think it was a good discussion after all and listening to the younger rational generation!!

‘Padmavat’ - an inconvenient truth that it exposes….’

30Jan2018

(#padmavat ; #padmavati )

And finally came ‘Padmavat’ the movie ….. released amid all the protests, positive and negative media covergaes, security concerns, focus on censor board and the courts ….it also triggered vigourous debates on the social media. Finally came the relaese of the movie under an altered name ‘Padmavat’ what was originally ‘Padmavati’.

In spite of the riots and protests, the movie continues to post a staggering Box Office earning. The movie itself will leave an impact on the younger generations as to how they remember these historical stories.

Some historical topics and stories are handed down through generations as a matter  of ‘clanish’ pride and some are handed down as a matter of shear inspiration … and it’s a norm that one doesn’t disturb the sentiments of the clans by challenging the tone of the stories handed down. Also it is commonly expected that one doesn’t glamourise the figures in these stories that command an untold sanctity in the hearts of the clan members.

However on the other hand, those who consider themselves as liberal, progressive etc. quote various laws and rights and do not hesitate to disturb people's sentiments and make their own business in name of providing ‘entertainment’ about these stories. This opportunism itself at times – almost un-intendedly - exposes some inconvenient facts. ‘Padmatvat’ movie seems to have done just that.

The first test of the people’s pulse was when the movie ‘Bajirao Mastani’ was released. It did  hurt the feelings of those who traditionally looked at Bajirao.1, Mastani and their Knights and Armies as extremely brave people. The movie depicted them as mere entertaining romantic cinema figures. It didn’t cause much disturbance as much as ‘Padmavati’ / ‘Padmavat’ did. It was probably because most of the public and new generation are oblivious to the valour of Bajirao.1 and looks at him through the caste and clan based attitudes seeded over the years in their minds.

Padmavati / Padmavat by contrast challenged the sanctity held in the hearts by millions of the clan as well as other public in general. Their feelings were based on the story as taught in the context of bravery and fight against the evil invaders.

Even I was angry at the sight of the movie-poster that I saw first time – wondering why this rather humiliating story was being made as if to cause anger in the minds of the millions of ordinary Indians like me …

So, I also had decided never to watch this movie  that in my opinion (without seeing the movie..) was exploiting the Indian history for their own commercial gains... but this opinion was to change soon !

But then my highly balanced and academically scholar minded son unbiasedly watched the movie in Australia – Melbourne and shared his unbiased views. At home my wife maintained a very pragmatic dialogue thus leaving me no choice but to watch the movie last night !

It was a challenge for me to go and watch the movie in which an Indian King was getting defeated by lust blinded Khilji. I finally went through the ordeal watching the plots in the story as well as the last scenes of Johar – the self scrifices of the Queen and her fellow women to save themselves from falling in the hands of the invaders who came for them.

After the movie we always have a detailed post movie discussions at home and with our son in Melbourne. The discussion had all the voices – for the praise of the perfomance, for the story depiction and the tone of the movie in general – and suddenly I got the answer I was seeking from my wife when she said something matter of factly while doing the household chores !!  She asked if this whole story would have been avoided at all ..??? ….what  if all the other Kings and knights in the area were to accept the King’s call and come for a united defence against the invasion of evilish Khilji charcter showed in the movie.

I remembered the story of the Great Chatrapati Shivaji calling for such a defence formation with a host of  Kings who were serving the Mughals Sultanate then – almost 400 years after the story time line of Padmavat. But they declined and in fact attacked Shivaji on behalf of the Moghals !! almost 20 years later the Peshwas faced it yet again and the colonial era began…

Even without any religious or clanish bias the movie is difficult to watch as an Indian. It is hard to watch that the force of evil & mindless unleashing of lust, cruenlty and greed unethical plundering a peacefully living kingdom and violating the decency of Indian women by salivating invaders who as per the stories told kept no bars held in their atrocities against the peacefully living multi cultural and multi religious peoples of India.

Though not mentioned in this movie, we do come across some history related write ups telling how the Chola King of the South India used to help the smaller kingdoms in the north west against the Central Asian and Moghal invaders.  Apparently when the Cholas remained engaged in the South East Asia these smaller kingdoms fell and accepted subordination of the Khilji like invaders and pluderers. Except may be for a few cases, these smaller kingdoms did not help each other to fight together as it also appears clearly from the movie Padmavat . And this is the inconvenient truth we learn from the movie Padmavat. This did not seem to bother anyone before the release of the movie – at least in the media reports I saw.

Declining to help each other due to the fear of the shear brutality of the Khilji like invaders those non-helping-kings let the brave men and women of  Chittod fall and perish.

The accuracies of the historical stories can always be debated, but the story of Padmavat movie has exposed this fault line in the pre-Mughal and pre-Colonial era Indian collective defences.

Looking at the recent divisive riots and protests one can say that even today these fault lines continue to be exploited for the sake of power and greed …
The Bollywood movies make strong impact on the Indian public in general. Padmavat should succeed in urging Indians to get over the divisive communal and caste based differences and be ONE People and ONE strong nation of mutual help and understanding !

That will be the best tribute to the sacrifices of the (probably fictitious) warrior Queen Padmavati, her King husband, their Brave soldiers and the people portrayed in the movie !!
